Moving Music is Hard.

Nothing quite like trying to move a piano.  Seriously, wow.  Luckily it was only a Baby Grand, but still...wow....  Supposedly a Baby Grand’s max weight is supposed to be 800 lbs.  But wow.

Okay, enough wows....  Here’s the deal, someone said, “My Baby Grand Piano needs a new home, who wants it?”  So obviously, the correct response is, “ME!!!!”  The things are worth several thousand dollars no matter how you look at it, and having a piano in the house is always worth it, as long as you have the room.

Amazingly enough, we do have the room.  And honestly, it looks great in the living room, but getting it there was a completely different story....

We knew it would be a challenge, because the things, no matter what the size, are extremely fragile.  One wrong move and you’re out the money, period.  Its best to hire professional movers.  They have the equipment to do it.  In the end, we live out in the middle of nowhere it and it was going to cost over $450 to get it moved about 5 miles.  When looking at the cost of a piano vs. the cost of moving it professionally, that’s probably a bargain, but that’s $450 we flat out didn’t have.

So, we rounded up a crew, watched a few videos, and set out on an adventure!!!!!

Okay, yeah, wasn’t too exciting, but between the 5 of us, we were able to easily disassemble all but one leg....  That turned out to be the first huge problem.  We couldn’t get it out the door easily.  So after messing with it, we finally got it at the perfect angle and got it out of the building....

Next step was getting it on the back of the pickup....  Yeah....  Fact is, we had a trailer lined up for it, but on that particular day it was in use somewhere else.  Ugh.  So, the 5 of us hoisted the thing into the pickup with great difficulty.  It actually fell off the dolly, but we had a blanket to lay it on.

Arriving at the house we lifted it off the pickup, and put it back on the dolly.  It almost fell off 3 times as we maneuvered it up the one step into the house.  Then finally it was in the living room.  The reassembly was pretty easy, as was getting it into position.

So, it was a ton of work, none of us got hurt, and the piano sustained only minor damage that can be easily fixed.  Was it worth it?  Yes, yes it was.  Would I do it again?  Yes, yes I would.  But I would suggest that no one, and I mean NO ONE ever try moving a piano by themselves.  Hire movers, its well worth it.

The only reason it was worth it for us, was because the piano was a gift.  And now, our home is an even better place to live, because we have a beautiful 100+ year old baby grand piano in the corner, that plays and sounds beautiful.

Now...only if my muscles would stop hurting from over exertion....  Maybe then...we can figure out what to do with it now that we have it....
