The Difficulty of Humor

Humor is an amazing little trait.  Its hard to say that its natural, when so many people work so hard at it, and achieve it.  But it does seem to be something that some people have naturally.  I personally have to work at it, just a tad, when I’m writing.

It seems that I’ve been writing far too serious stuff for me to calmly interject humor into just anything I write.  Which is sad, because I’m pretty humorous in person.  I partially wonder if it’s a thought process thing, since writing to me is so far removed from talking.  Both are quite natural to me, but this writing thing feels a bit different because its more of a monolog.

I often wonder if the lack of humor, or the type of humor I use, is a detriment to the blog.  I’m a big fan of irony, and sarcasm, so I hope that shines through when I paint a picture with words.  These blog posts run like essays to me, so for some reason, I fall into a more formal type of writing maybe.

Either way, I decided to pull off a couple of guest posts.  One was on a humor site named Mulledvine.  The site has a very odd sense of humor, lots of sarcasm and irony, which is fun for me to read.  Sometimes the little stories can be far fetched, some can be close to home, but each tend to end with a punch line that works really well, whether it be very humorous, or very sad.  Either way, my guest post is up, so click HERE to read it!

Admittedly my humor doesn’t really blossom in that way.  I tend to like to point out the irony of a situation with sarcasm, where that site interjects a bit of fantasy, and turns a normal situation into a fictionalized story that would stick in your head if you fall into a situation like that.  The site would work very well as a cartoon, like Peanuts, Garfield, or Frank and Ernest.

The other site, that I have guest posted for, is Kooz's Top 5, which is a site all about Top 5 lists.  Its a great little site to go browse through, because its been up for quite some time, so there are many many many posts in the backlog to find.  If they don't have a list for the topic you are looking for, you can send a message, and they'll look into it.  I decided to do a very humorous top five about guest posting itself, and then break every rule.  You can see the post HERE, I do hope you enjoy it.

Even if my guest posts weren’t accepted, it got me inspired to try new things.  And that’s what this blogging experience is all about to me.  Attempting something new, working outside my own box, and seeing how other people enjoy what I’m doing.  Its especially nice when you get the feedback in the form of comments.  That way I can tell better what works and what didn’t.

In the end, I’m just glad this medium involves typing, and that my typing is legible (face it, some people’s typing isn’t legible) because my own handwriting is so atrocious I can’t even read it.  That’s probably what I’ve learned most from this digital age, is that typing is awesome.

So, how much humor do you like in blog posts? What about your writing, do you like sprinkling in humor?  What kind of humor do you find the best?  Comment below and lets discuss our opinions on what exactly is funny!
